Muscat – The State Council, chaired by H E Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, discussed a proposal submitted by the Culture, Information and Tourism committee that focuses on the Omani theatre, its present status and role in the society.

The third bureau meeting, held in the presence of the members and the council’s secretary general, hosted Dr Ahmed bin Ali Mohammed al Mashikhi, head of the committee for an in-depth discussion on the proposal, stated a press release.

Dr Mashikhi elaborated on the varied aspects pertaining to the study of the Omani theatre and its role in the society.

He said that the study would identify the obstacles that had prevented the implementation of the plan to advance the theatre, in particular the Omani drama, as well as the reality of today’s theatre, challenges and difficulties it faces.

It will also propose appropriate solutions and mechanisms for its advancement, and identify the role of governmental institutions and bodies in supporting the Omani theatre with specialised technical staff in the field of drama and production.

Dr Mashikhi noted that the study came in the context of the need to highlight the role of theatre in society, with the aim to enrich the Omani cultural scenario and maximise the role of the theatre in the overall national development process. This will consequently enable positive impact on enhancing the role of drama and dramatic productions in support of community’s cultural diversity.

Following its discussion of the proposal, the bureau directed the committee to expand the scope of the study to include drama in general and to include all relevant stakeholders in the study of the proposal.
