Municipality to introduce more tourist-friendly facilities in Muttrah

The civic body plans to set up more toilets, signboards and an interactive map, in the area that is popular not just among tourists but also with citizens and residents.

“Muttrah is a prominent landmark in the country. Apart from foreign visitors, residents and citizens from different parts of the country too frequent the place. Some of the popular places in the area include the Muttrah Souq, corniche, Kalbouh Park and the Riyam Park,” a Muscat Municipality official said.

The official said that the area also is a must-visit spot for many tourists who come to Oman via cruise ships that dock at Port

Sultan Qaboos. “Most of the tourists roam around in the Muttrah area during daylong trips. We are planning to install an interactive map and set up more toilets.”

He said that better facilities will help attract more tourists and boost revenue. “Public toilets are an important aspect for any visitor. We have four public toilets in the area and another will be set up near the Riyam Park area as well.”

The official said that the municipality has already put up signboards inside the souq to guide visitors. “Muttrah Souq has a lot of shops which many people are not even aware of. Many of these shops are known for Omani artefacts.

“The souq has lots of bylanes and sometimes visitors tend to get lost. These signboards will help them in exploring the souq.”

An interactive map would be a big help for visitors who arrive via the port. “This map will have addresses of tourist spots and price of entry tickets etc. It will also display mode of transport details and the time. You get such maps in other countries. Better facilities will encourage tourists to revisit the place.”
