New Cave Discovered in Jebel Akhdar

An Omani geologist and his team has found a 50m deep cave in the mountains of Jebel Akhdar. Called Khasilat al Jubul, the 140m long and 3m wide cave is located between the two wadis.

Dr Mohammed bin Hilal al Kindi, a geologist and cave expert who played a key role in the discovery, told that the new cave is located between Wadi al Masir and Wadi Saada. “The cave has been named Khasilat al Jubul. We found the cave’s entrance hidden under a thick bush.”

Speaking about the cave, Dr Kindi said, “There are insects and animals and bird remains such as eagles. It also has some fantastic limestone formations that seemed to have been formed during the Jurassic period.”

Considering Oman’s topography, Dr Kindi said that a team comprising local volunteers has been formed to find more caves in the area.

“Our team has already discovered five caves in Jebel Akhdar which is a great achievement for us and we hope to find more. Such sites will help boost the country’s tourism profile,” Dr Kindi said.
