Princess Dina, Muscat Municipality chief discuss cooperation in cancer control

Muscat – In an attempt to enhance cooperation in various cases, H E Eng Mohsin bin Mohammed al Sheikh, chairman of Muscat Municipality, received Princess Dina Mired al Hussein, president of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and a number of council’s representatives on Wednesday.

Their visit was aimed at identifying aspects of joint cooperation between the council and the municipality under the preparatory efforts for the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit, stated a press release.

During the visit, a presentation touched on the importance of the conference as it puts the sultanate on a joint international action plan to combat and respond to cancer.

The sultanate will be the first country in the Gulf and Arab world to host the global event.

Municipality’s participation through awareness programmes and the dissemination of a health culture of prevention and reduction of the spread of the disease through the roles and tasks of municipal work, was discussed.

Princess Dina talked about the importance of the role played by municipality in neighbourhoods, cleanliness of streets and creating specific areas for physical exercise, which would enhance the existence of a healthy lifestyle, added the release.

She noted that the conference would attract stakeholders, including the municipality, to create awareness on the causes of cancer like smoking.

She also stressed on the need for regulation, supervision and inspection of shops serving sheesha, and the introduction of health and environmental procedures. Princess Dina was elected first Arab president of UICC in recognition of the efforts she has made in the fight against the disease locally and internationally.
