Road accidents on rise due to tyre bursts

Come summer, fatalities in accidents caused by tyre bursts increase despite regular public awareness campaigns conducted by the Royal Oman Police and other authorities concerned. Data from the Director-General of Traffic at ROP is startling.

Accidents due to tyre bursts and other mechanical snags claimed 14 lives last year and caused injuries to 95 persons from a mammoth 155 accidents!

“Most dangerous accidents that occurred last year, were caused by tyre bursts which resulted into the vehicles overturning,” said an ROP official.

While urging drivers to check tyre pressure at regular intervals, he said that poorly inflated tyres wear more quickly and affect the overall performance of the vehicle, including braking distance, handling and safety. “High speed, long trips, heavy loads and higher temperatures all put additional stress on tyres”, he said.

In Oman, the maximum number of accidents happens during summer, he said. He urged motorists to be extraordinarily cautious in the coming days especially in view of the forthcoming holy month of Ramadhan when people tend to rush at high speed to attend iftaar. “Taking care of their tyres will carry drivers and their families safely and comfortably through the hot summer months, and help to avoid accidents”, he said.
