28 families evacuated after fire breaks out in residential building in Oman

Around 28 families had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in a residential building at Honda Road in Ruwi early morning on Wednesday, residents said.

“The fire broke out in a flat in the building after 12am. We were all clueless about what happened. It was a scary situation. Fire brigades were called and they had to fight for more than two hours to contain the spread of the fire,” residents said.

“Police team evacuated all of us. We had to stay in our friends’ room. We just returned to our flat. Today we won’t be able to go to office,” residents added.

“Nobody was injured in the fire,” residents added.

Last week too, a residential building in Muttrah was damaged in fire.

A Royal Oman Police (ROP) official had said earlier that fire threat remains a major challenge for establishments in Oman.

“Unorganised and poorly marked storage of cables and flammable materials in any building raises the risk of damage by fire,” Colonel Said Al Asmi, assistant general manager for Operations at the Royal Oman, had said.

Lack of proper safety precautions at some hotels, ports, banks and other facilities in Oman can put them at risk of catching fire, Al Asmi said, adding that fire cases increase during summer due to high temperatures.
