Advil suspension taken off shelves in UAE

Move came after Pfizer Canada recalled the medicine from markets for their non-compliance with the product’s specifications

Abu Dhabi:  The Ministry of Health and Prevention withdrew Children’s Advil Suspension from the market following request from the manufacture, Pfizer, due to safety concerns.

Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing at the ministry, on Monday said the move came after Pfizer Canada recalled the medicine from the markets for their non-compliance with the product’s specifications.

He said the ministry issued administrative circular 107 for 2016 informing medicine providers that Pfizer Canada has suspended the distribution of Advil products, whose batch numbers are J89260 and L21258 of Children’s Advil Suspension 100mg/5ml, 100ml.

“The circular calls on medicine providers to pull off Advil suspension off pharmacy shelves in the local market,” Al Amiri said.  He added that Advil manufacturer Pfizer has also recalled the product in Canada.

The manufacturer said the products were made using an additive called xanthene gum from Danisco. The clumps of Ibuprofen may form in the bottle and lead to higher or lower doses that are given to infants and children if it is not shaken well before each use.

The manufacturer said that it was withdrawing some batches of its liquid products for infants and children “because of a potential risk of inconsistencies in the dosage.”

Al Amiri appealed to the public not to buy Advil products number  J89260 and L21258 of Children’s Advil Suspension 100mg/5ml, 100ml. He advised parents who have these products at home to get rid of them.  He stressed that other batches of the same product are valid and safe .
