Aluminium in Omafen tablets; Ministry of Health orders recall

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has recalled Omafen tablets due to the presence of small pieces of aluminium.

Manufactured by National Pharmaceutical Industries, Omafen is an anti-inflammatory drug containing Ibuprofen tablets (400mg).

The batch numbers 0514005, 0513011 and 0515006 have been recalled.

A circular on the recall from Jamila Abdul Amir, director of drug stores, MoH, marked to the directors of pharmaceutical care and medical stores, the Royal and Khoula Hospitals, directors/superintendents of pharmacy and medical stores across all governorates and heads of pharmacy and medical stores of all autonomous hospitals, was sent on February 29.

“We would like to inform you that we received a circular No 11/2016 on February 28 from the Directorate General of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Drug Control informing that the above mentioned batches were found to be physically unsatisfactory as the tablets were found to have small aluminium pieces,” the circular from Jamila stated.

“It may be noted that the samples from the above mentioned three batches had been tested and passed QCL analysis earlier but after wide use, the above defects have been noted in some strips of these batches. Therefore, you are requested to stop using the item and return them urgently to the Directorate General of Medical Supplies.”
