Housemaid stranded in Oman after manpower agency keeps passport

A housemaid staying at the Indian Embassy’s shelter for the past three months is stranded in Oman due to the absence of documents.

“My passport and resident card have been taken away by a manpower agency in Bausher, causing delay in my return home. I am now housed at the shelter,” said 52 year old Anita Fernandes.

Anita said she came to Oman  to work as a housemaid in 2015. “I came through a manpower agency in India and my first job lasted only three months. My employer transferred me to an agency in Bausher, which has a tie-up with the Indian agent.”

Anita, a diabetic and a heart patient, then landed another job, which too she did not continue for long. “Due to my ailments, the house owner was reluctant to keep me for long and I was again referred to the Bausher agency.”

Anita’s next employer, upon knowing of her health condition, brought her to the embassy.

An official from the embassy’s social welfare department said all attempts are on to repatriate her at the earliest.
