Coast Guard nabs 28 infiltrators off Barka

The Royal Oman Police represented by the Coast Guard Command, said it has arrested 28 suspected infiltrators, belonging to an Asian country

While they were trying to sneak in along the Wilayat of Barka in South Al Batinah Governorate, in a small boat, earlier this week. Acting on a tip-off about the sighting of a suspicious craft off Barka, the Operations Directorate relayed the information to the South Batinah Coast Guard Police Station which immediately deployed its patrol boat, Haras-5, to the scene. It confirmed the presence of a boatload of alleged infiltrators en route to the coast.

Intercepting the craft some nautical miles from the shores off Barka, the Coast Guard took into custody the 28 foreigners on board, an official added. The accused were later handed over to the Barka Police Station for further investigations, while the infiltrators’ craft was impounded by the Coast Guard, the official source noted. The Royal Oman Police urged citizens and residences not to extend any direct or indirect assistance to suspected infiltrators or their accomplices in the form of rental homes, transport, and information about locations. Moreover, the ROP sought the continued cooperation of the general public in combating illegal activities, notably by reporting any suspicious activity along Oman’s seashores or coastal waters.

The source urged citizens and residents to keep a safe distance from suspected infiltrators and to report any suspicious behaviour to ROP and await the arrival of the competent authorities on the scene. Reports of any crimes or suspicious activity may be reported directly to the Coast Guard Command by dialing 24714661 or 24714888, or calling the toll-free emergency number 9999. Likewise, the general public can also report their concerns to the nearest police station in any wilayat, the statement added.
