Fish prices to be stable during Ramadhan

The ministerial decision imposing a 3-month ban on the export of certain fish species came into force yesterday coinciding with the month of Ramadhan which sees an increased demand for fish.

The concerned authorities are making big efforts to supply sufficient quantities of high-quality fish at the local market specially during the month of Ramadhan which sees decreased supplies as fishermen make fewer fishing trips.

During Ramadhan the ministry of agriculture and fisheries in cooperation with the fish marketing companies provide additional fish supplies which are sold to consumers at competitive prices.

The prices of fish dropped significantly all across the Sultanate during the first five months of this year due to cold weather along the Sultanate’s coastline and increased fish supplies. Total fish quantities produced by artisan fishing at the end of January grew 16.5 per cent at 24,200 tonnes compared with 20,800 tonnes in the corresponding period of last year. The figure for February jumped to 26,000 tonnes.
