Heat Wave Sweeps Across Oman

Oman is in the grip of an intense heat wave with Sunday becoming the hottest day of the summer as Suwaiq recorded the highest temperature at 49°C. The wilayats of Amerat, Barka, Khabourah and Rustaq registered 48°C.

The Met office also issued an advisory for dust and sandstorm in Buraimi, Fahud, Ibri and Haima.

Temperatures have been soaring this month with Quriyat hitting 47.5°C on June 1 and since then many places have registered above 46°C. On June 9, Quriyat again hit a high of 47.7°C, Amerat at 46.9°C, Bidbid at 46.6°C and Rustaq at 46.4°C.

On June 11, the hottest was Rustaq at 46.7°C, followed by Amerat and Bidbid at 46°C.

The Met office said that the current heat wave is due to the “southwesterly winds blowing over most parts of the sultanate”.

According to Met’s historical data, the highest average summer temperature is 44.1°C recorded in Haima, followed by 43.8°C in Fahud. Highest average for Muscat is 40°C.

While people in the north braved the sun, Salalah in the south had a brush with its first seasonal rain, resulting in mercury dipping to 31°C.
