Heatwave: Mercury crossed 47°C in several wilayats

The sultanate is again in the grip of a heatwave as the mercury crossed 47°C in several wilayats on Sunday.

There was no respite even at night as temperatures in most cities hovered over 31°C, with Amerat, Seeb and Khasab experiencing one of the hottest nights of the year at 37°C on Sunday.

The top five hottest places on Saturday were Sininah and Fahud at 47.5°C, Muqshin at 47.3°C, Amerat at 46.6°C and Ibri at 46.5°C.

The Met office in its temperature chart for Sunday predicted that the temperature would hit 48°C in Fahud, 47°C in Buraimi, Ibri, Adam and Amerat, and 46°C in Rustaq, Samail, Nizwa, Bahla, Sur and Haima. The temperature in Muscat on Sunday was 44°C.

There seems to be no respite from the heat even after sunset as a majority of governorates continued to witness temperatures over 30°C at night. Rustaq, Suwaiq, Sohar, Ibri and Yanqul experienced around 35°C at night on Sunday while Buraimi, Madha, Samail and Sur experienced 33°C. Several other cities witnessed 30-plus night time temperatures.

According to historical data, Samail has the highest average night time temperature for July at 31.4°C. Lowest average for Muscat is at 30.1°C while the highest average is at 38°C. The Met office also said that thunderstorms were likely to occur in Buraimi, Rustaq, Ibra, Samail, Bahla, Ibri, Nizwa, Suwaiq, Mudhaibi, A’Saiq, Yanqul, Quriyat, Saham, Jebel Shams, Khabourah, Hamra and Izki.
