The Met office on Wednesday said that several parts of the sultanate are likely to receive more thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, due to deep depression.
In its advisory, the Met office said that moderate to heavy showers are expected in the governorates of Muscat, South Batinah, Al Wusta and North and South Sharqiyah.
The thunderstorm advisory was issued for Muscat, Amerat, Bausher, Quriyat, Rustaq, Ibra, Sohar, Samail, Bahla, Qalhat, Nizwa, Adam, Sur, Suwaiq, Mudhaibi, Mahout, Saiq, Ras al Hadd, Bidiyah, Yanqul, Bidbid, Saham, Jebel Shams, Al Hamra and Izki. The Met office said that cloudy to partly cloudy skies will prevail over North Batinah, Dhahirah, Dakhliyah with chances of convective clouds development and thundershowers over the Hajar mountains and adjoining areas, and Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates.
It also warned of flash floods from thundershowers and poor visibility due to fog patches. The sea state is expected to be moderate in Musandam governorate with maximum wave height of 2m, and low along the Sea of Oman with maximum wave height of 1.5m.
An official in the Met office said that several parts of Muscat, Dakhliyah, Dhahirah, Al Wusta, North and South Batinah and North Sharqiyah received rain and hail on Wednesday. After hail turned the mountains and the plains of Al Hamra and Samail white on Tuesday, parts of Sur too got covered with hail on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources’ rainfall monitoring stations recorded 55mm in Wadi Bani Khalid on Tuesday. Samail reported rainfall of 35mm, Sur 33mm, Ibra and Izki 30mm, Bausher 27mm, Nizwa 22mm, Nakhl 19mm, Al Hamra 18mm and Amerat 15mm.
