Municipality shuts down 112 shops in Q1 of 2016

Muscat Municipality’s health and inspection drives in the first quarter of 2016 have led to the closure of 112 shops, destroying of 1,269kg foodstuff and registering of 851 violations.

Teams from the Inspection and Foodstuff Control departments in all directorates of Muscat Municipality (Seeb, Bausher, Muttrah, Amerat and Quriyat) carried out 10,237 visits to restaurants, coffee shops and health and food establishments during this period.

As many as 112 shops and food establishment were ordered shut and 851 violations registered for violating health and hygiene requirements. The 1,269 kg of foodstuff destroyed included meat, poultry, fish, processed and cooked food.

These were found to be well past their use-by date and hence, unfit for consumption. Among other items confiscated and destroyed were 1,483 packs of soft drinks, 109kg of expired cosmetics and 2,064 cooking equipment.

In Seeb, 48 establishments were shut down and 318 violations registered. Twenty two establishments were closed down in Bausher and 250 violations filed. In Muttrah and Muscat, 39 shops were closed and 177 violations registered. Two shops were shut in Amerat and 60 violations registered. One establishment was ordered closed in Quriyat and 46 violations registered.
