Expat arrested in cotton candy factory raid gets 14 months in jail, fined RO2,400

A court in Salalah has sentenced an Asian expat to 14 months in jail and slapped a fine of RO2,400 for running an unlicensed makeshift cotton candy factory and also flouting health safety norms.

The sweet was being manufactured in unhygienic conditions using raw material whose source was unknown. The Asian will be deported after completion of his sentence, a press release stated. Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted by a team from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection in coordination with the ROP and the Public Prosecution.
A residence had been converted into the factory and the cotton candy made here was sold in public places. The plastic bags used to pack the candy were inflated by mouth, creating a high risk of passing on diseases to children consuming it. The team found that no hygiene norms had been followed and the machinery was dirty.
