Parking Fee Likely to Be Hiked

Muscat Municipality has sent a proposal to the government on raising parking rates across the governorate.

“The proposal to hike parking fee comes after a long time. The proposal has been sent to the government after much deliberation. Low oil prices have affected all government bodies as budgets have been slashed. We are looking at various options to raise revenues,” a Muscat Municipality official told Muscat Daily.

As per the proposal, the fee for every 30 minutes will be raised from 50bz to 100bz. Parking fee payment through SMS will be hiked from 60bz for 30 minutes to 100bz.

“It has been proposed that fines for non-payment of parking fee will be raised from RO3 to RO10,” the official said, adding that some motorists just pay for 30 minutes or an hour, but keep the car parked all day. “For such violation, the fine has been proposed at RO5.”

Zonal parking fees, however, will not see any hike. “The rate will continue to be RO5 per month for specific zones and RO15 for parking anywhere in the governorate.”
