People advised caution as rain reported in Jabal Al Akhdar

Heavy rain and hailstorm fell in the Jabal Al Akhdar area yesterday leading to overflow of wadis, ONA reported.

Meanwhile, people have been advised to avoid low lying areas and crossing wadis by Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA).

Late on Saturday, Oman Meteorology Department predicted rain in different parts of Oman after due to presence of rain clouds over the Sultanate.

In its forecast, the Department predicted chances of convective clouds development with isolated rain occasionally over Al Hajar Mountain and adjoining areas.

Despite repeated warnings by authorities, two Omanis were killed when their vehicle was swept away by flood waters in Wadi Kabeel of Quriyat province in April. Rain had claimed seven lives in March. Last week, a top official from Oman Meteorology Department said that tropical activities and storm season is approaching Oman as May has arrived, bringing high temperatures.

“Chances of tropical storms formation during this month and the beginning of June have been already indicated by several numerical weather prediction models,” the official said.

However, the forecasters have not yet announced the exact areas which will be hit by storms and accompanied with rain. In the first week of April, many areas of Oman witnessed heavy rain as weather monitoring station in Bahla recorded 107.4 millimetres (mm) of rainfall, while Samail recorded 22.6 mm and Bausher 13.2 mm.

According to the Directorate General of Meteorology at PACA, Ibri recorded the maximum amount of rain last month.
