170 firms violated the midday break rule

The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has said that 170 firms violated the midday break rule between June 1 and July 10.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, officials inspected 1,376 work sites and found that 1,206 establishments adhered to the rule.

The midday break rule bans work at outdoor sites between 12.30pm and 3.30pm from June to August every year. According to Article 118 of the Oman Labour Law, violators can be penalised with fines ranging from RO100 to RO500, or a jail term of not more than a month, or both. The penalty doubles for repeat violations.

The rule has been formulated to reduce occupational hazards and increase the productivity of workers.
